562. A judge must not pervert a case involving a stranger or orphan.

Status: Active
N-280
"Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge: But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing." ~ Deut. 24:17-18
This commandment prohibits the court from perverting judgment, or applying the law differently due to their status as a resident alien or orphan.  All of the protections afforded to witness under this law-order, and all of the prohibitions against government power had to be followed for anyone brought before the court.

The word stranger found in the Old Testament is defined according to this entry in the Bible Dictionary: "The word is frequently used to denote a man of non-Israelite birth, resident in the promised land with the permission of the Israelite authorities. There were various provisions in the law with regard to the treatment of strangers, all of which were intended to secure for them justice and fair treatment".

The Lord desires that all human beings be afforded the protection from the abusive power of government.  When these laws are disregarded by a people, nation, or law order, they commit suicide.  They will destroy themselves from within.  As a remembrance to those who might be tempted to pervert justice, the Lord added the phrase "thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt."  Israel was oppressed unjustly when they were foreigners under Egyptian law-order.  Those who are numbered amongst the people of God will always remember this fact, and will never treat the weak or non-covenant accused unjustly.

This commandment is a restriction on the power of secular government.  This commandment has not been repealed, and is part of the definition of righteous judgement commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are bound to petition our leaders, or enact when possible, the same restrictions upon the governments in which we reside.  No one should be elected as a public administrator of the law who will pervert justice in the fashion prohibited in this commandment.  Any sitting public official or administrator should be removed from office who violates this commandment.
