571. Carefully interrogate the witness

Status: Active
P-179
"Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;" ~ Deut. 13:14
This commandment is interpreted amongst Jewish scholars to require diligent investigation and examination over the testimony of a witness before issuing a verdict.  This commandment forms the principle from which procedures to fulfill this commandment are derived, e.g. how to investigate, examine, qualifications for evidence admission, etc.

This commandment is a restriction on the power of secular government.  This commandment has not been repealed, and is part of the definition of righteous judgement commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are bound to petition our leaders, or enact when possible, the same restrictions upon the governments in which we reside.  No human being should be punished by secular government without having had the evidence brought against him diligently scrutinized.
